DESIGN CONCEPT

Milk Like Sugar is a play by Kirsten Greenidge about three high school girls living in a low income area who decide to form a pregnancy pact. This production of it was staged in an experimental warehouse location that helped to set an urban environment, but it came with a number of design and technical challenges. The world that we created was based on the outside influences and noises in these girls' lives, namely corporations, music, and social media who's target demographic are adolescents living in low income areas.

The sounds of this production fell into two categories, ambient and music, with as much bleedover of the music into the ambient noises as possible. There is music in almost every scene, as both something that the characters interact with and a part of the environment, and it carries the action from scene to in the form of heightened dance and movement pieces that resonates the actions and emotions of the characters. Almost all of the music used was by female artists, and some of it was by solo artists who used to be a part of a group to reflect the dynamic of the main characters as their group fell apart.
